Spirituality
Today: The Quest for Meaning in Our Life Story
We may speak of spirituality
as:
how we see
life
how we live
life
where we
turn for support
how we deal
with suffering
It may be found in our story
the story
we tell with our life
the script
we follow in our life story
the inner
thread we weave in living out our life story
Our life story may be seen as
the story of our quest for meaning
a sense of
identity and worth
a sense of
belonging and purpose
...a
process of gradually gathering our self into our hands as something
valuable,
giving that
self to what is truly worthwhile,
and
trusting in the lasting significance of our lives,
and
the underlying Source and Goal of all that is.
Each event of that life story
may also be seen as containing a gift and call
to bring
something to life
rather than
put something to death
even to
bring new life out of the many deaths in the midst of life
within
ourselves, our relationships, our society, and our world.
The foundation of
spirituality, in this perspective, is
the
intrinsic worth, value, or sacredness
of each and every human person,
of every
living thing, and of all that is,
and the
ultimate ground of that sacredness;
and its
goal is to become a life-giving presence
within,
among, and around ourselves.
